It's great when teachers touch on voter topics, but we need a curriculum that directly focuses on voter education and includes dedicated time for activities. The Process
Teaching youth voter education as a Student
As a student myself, I knew that what I wanted to create had to look interesting and grab the attention of the students. There were several times when I scratch a whole design of slides and activities because I felt that it simply wasn't enough for the students. Though, I'm not a teacher I understood the importance of switching things up once and awhile, and that's what I wanted to do for the students during the two class periods I was able to teach.
I researched different ways to make the style of teaching I wanted to approach come to life. I also knew that as a student, there are certain ways that I would have like to be taught every now and then and I would like to encourage all teachers to approach different ways of teaching and switch it up here and there. It might help with improving connections with students and their attention to your class.
There are pros and cons to including incentives in classes for students. However, with the appropriate moderation of incentive activities and lessons, it could help improve the dynamic of a class and I think that may have helped me in the teaching of underclassman.

Ice Breakers
Depending on the Ice Breaker, it can be a way to get the students to open up and prepare for actual class discussions after participating in a quick fun icebreaker discussion or activity. For the to classes, I had the students go around and share the three things they would bring with them before getting stuck on an island.

Activity #1: This activity ask students to identify what things are decided under a federal or local government. it's a great way to help students understand how important the local government is.
Activity #2: I used this activity as a warm up to give students a chance to start thinking about government and the way it affects our lives.

Activist and U.S representative for Missouri 1st congressional district: Congresswoman Cori Bush

Cori Bush is a new face in politics. I first heard about her on social media advocating for Black lives and observed how she didn't let anyone censor her messaging. I had the opportunity and the pleasure to watch the full impeachment debate before and after the capitol riot. Congresswoman Cori Bush only had thirty seconds to speak. Those thirty seconds were powerful. She used that time to call out the former president and those who support and enabled his behavior; she called them out for being the white supremacist they are. I also watched how the far-right booed her when she finished like they were children. Though Cori Bush is a new face in the D.C. Capitol, she won't be going anywhere any time soon. She isn't afraid to call out her opponents and those who sit on the same side as her when they are wrong. It's an honor and a gift to have Cori Bush represent Black Women and Black People in those walls of the capitol.
